I never dreamed I would ever go to Alaska and hunt Black Bear, but dreams can come true!
It was the opening day of bear season on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. Four hunting buddies from Texas were as excited as little boys on Christmas morning. This was a do-it-yourself hunt without guides, and we were fired up for the five-day hunt.
The first day of the hunt we decided to drive the winding logging roads in the back country hoping to spot a bear. When I saw the bear, it was up on a mountainside sitting on an enormous stump looking over its domain.
It was shootin' time! In the pouring down rain I had difficulty seeing through my scope. The bear took off in a hurry, and my 9mm Magnum made a running shot at about a hundred yards.
My friend, Jack, helped me skin the bear on the mountainside in a drawn pose. Every time I look at the life-size mount of my Alaskan Black Bear it brings back wonderful memories of an adventurous day in God's marvelous creation in the wilds of Alaska.
